Safety Starts Now
Make A Plan
Emergency plans help ensure you stay connected with family and friends during a disaster.
- Create and practice a family communications plan in case you are separated.
- Choose a designated meeting spot for your family.
- Ensure all family members have an emergency contact list, including an out-of-state contact, as non-local calls may be easier after an emergency.
- Know the location of your city or town's emergency shelter and how to get there.
- Download and complete our Emergency Communications Plan.
- Make sure every family member has a copy and is familiar with the contact information and meeting locations.
Build A Kit
A disaster supply kit should include essential items that household members may need in the event of an emergency. It can be useful during an extended power outage at home or if you need to evacuate to a shelter. In a crisis, there may not be time to gather necessary supplies, so having a kit prepared in advance is crucial.
After assembling your disaster supply kit, store it properly to ensure that items remain safe and usable.
- Keep canned food in a cool, dry place and discard any swollen, dented, or corroded cans.
- Store boxed food in sealed plastic or metal containers to protect it from pests and extend shelf life.
- Rotate food and water supplies every six months, labeling containers with storage dates.
- Check your kit twice a year, replacing expired items and adding anything new.
- Store supplies in easy-to-carry containers like a backpack, duffel bag, or wheeled suitcase.
- Consider creating kits for your car and workplace.
